Background
Climate change and the outdoor industry

Uniquely at risk
The $887 billion outdoors industry is uniquely at risk from drought, flooding, low snowpack, fires, and other extreme-weather-related phenomena linked to global warming.

Ambitious goals
The Outdoor Industry Association’s Climate Action Corps announced its first Annual Impact Report and set the goal to become the world’s first climate-positive industry by 2030.

Part of a brand strategy
Climate action not only addresses threats, it also creates opportunities as demonstrated by Patagonia.Â

Avoid Greenwashing
There is no Net Zero without carbon removal. Planting trees is not enough for companies that are serious about their sustainability strategy.Â

Carbon Removal Projects
We work with the best carbon removal projects
from around the world to create global impact

Climeworks
Climeworks’ Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology uses large fans to remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Utilizing Carbfix’s mineralization process, they permanently store the CO2 underground in natural sinks, such as geological formations.

Carbon Engineering
Climate Engineering’s scalable Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology uses large fans to extract, purify, and compress atmospheric CO2. Pumping it into underground geological formations ensures permanent and safe storage of the carbon.

Charm
Charm converts sustainably sourced waste biomass into bio-oil using fast pyrolysis. Utilizing repurposed oil infrastructure, they inject bio-oil, a carbon-rich liquid, into underground rock formations where it solidifies, permanently storing the carbon.

greenSand
greenSand provides enhanced weathering solutions by applying a basalt rock mineral called olivine in landscaping and agriculture. When water combines with CO2 it reacts with and weathers the mineral, which permanently stores the carbon in carbonate minerals.

Project Vesta
Project Vesta provides enhanced weathering through coastal application of ground olivine-containing rock. The mineral dissolves in the water and enhances CO2 absorption by the ocean, which ultimately leads to increased storage of carbon in ocean-floor sediments.

Running Tide
Running Tide’s blue carbon project uses photosynthesis to sequester CO2 into kelp biomass. Ocean currents and gravity are then utilized to transport and permanently store the biomass carbon on the deep ocean floor for thousands of years.

Carbonfuture
Carbonfuture generates biochar from waste biomass and puts it back into the soil. Their system ensures documented and verified removals for more than 100 years.

Carbo Culture
Carbo Culture’s pyrolysis plants convert agriculture and forestry waste into biochar, a stable carbon-rich material, without the need for an external heat source. Depositing the biochar into soils safely stores the carbon for over 1000 years.

Nori
Nori rewards farmers who increase atmospheric CO2 drawdown and soil carbon storage using regenerative agriculture practices. They accurately quantify and third-party verify these carbon removals, and use blockchain technology to prevent double counting.

FCOTI
FCOTI helps over 1000 small-scale farmers in Timor-Leste to plant trees, which sequester carbon and enhance soil carbon storage. This boosts biodiversity, mitigates climate change, and reduces soil degradation, while improving local livelihoods.

Taking Root
Taking Root uses reforestation to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, restore ecosystems, and improve the livelihoods of communities in Central America. They use their software platform, FARM-TRACE, to track, measure and verify their carbon impacts.

The Green Branch
The Green Branch puts local communities at the center of their South American reforestation projects. To ensure impactful long-term benefits for all stakeholders involved, they accurately monitor, measure, and third-party verify their projects.
*We use different projects for each methods composing your carbon removal. The projects used in your removal may vary based on availability.

Our approach
We analyse high-quality projects from around the globe,
exclusively sourcing projects that remove carbon

Direct Air Capture
€€€EUR 700-900 / Ton
Direct Air Capture uses large fan-like machines to pull CO₂ directly out of the atmosphere. Captured CO₂ can either be stored permanently in rock formations underneath the earth’s surface or reused for other materials.

Bio-Oil
€€€EUR 500-600 / Ton
By heating up biomass to extremely high temperatures without oxygen, carbon is locked up in bio-oil. This carbon-rich material can then either be stored away permanently underground or be refined and used as a green energy source.

Ocean Blue Carbon
€€EUR 150-250 / Ton
Ocean Blue Carbon is a method that taps into the carbon sequestration potential of ocean biomass. CO2 is permanently removed from the atmosphere by transporting seaweed to the middle of the ocean and sinking the carbon-rich biomass to its depths.

Biochar
€€EUR 100-190 / Ton
Heating waste biomass to high temperatures without oxygen turns it into carbon-rich biochar. Applied to soils, biochar is great for storing carbon for a long time while simultaneously increasing agricultural productivity.

Forestation
€EUR 15-30 / Ton
Trees are the earth’s natural carbon removal machines. Trees sequester CO₂ using photosynthesis and store it in every part of the tree. A single tree can capture up to a ton of CO₂ in its lifetime.

Coastal Blue Carbon
COMING SOON
Coastal blue carbon is the carbon stored in coastal ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrass meadows, tidal marshes, and shellfish reefs. Carbon is stored in plant biomass and the associated soils and sediments of these ecosystems.
Reasonable things to ask
Why combine methods, and include more expensive methods?
Not all offsets are created equal. Some remove COâ‚‚ from the atmosphere for thousands of years, while others will only keep it out for a few decades. Some have great benefits for biodiversity and social impact while others only remove COâ‚‚.
By increasing your budget, you are able to include more different methods, and crucially send a market signal that there is demand for new solutions to the climate challenge.
We didn’t make this up ourselves. If you want to dig into the science of why we need to combine methods, we strongly encourage you to read the Oxford Principles for future-aligned Offsetting.
Why are there no solar energy or cookstove projects in our portfolios?
Shouldn't we focus on reducing emissions rather than compensating?
Reducing our emissions is absolutely the most important task the world is facing in our lifetime.
The first priority for any company should be to reduce everything they can as soon as possible. We strongly discourage companies from prioritising offsetting over real reductions in emissions.Â
Once a company is on a path to reduce what it feasibly can, supplementing with offsets is necessary. Unfortunately, it is no longer enough to reduce our emissions, and we need to significantly scale carbon removal.
We have a massive, complicated problem, and we need to be able to focus both on reducing emissions and on how we can do something about the CO₂ that is already in the atmosphere.
Why should different companies use different portfolios?
