The cost of emitting: Introducing airline offsets that actually have a climate impact
PLAY now enables people to travel and discover the world in a responsible way, so we can, for the foreseeable future, continue to experience what the world has to offer.
We are super excited to see an airline company like PLAY leaning into their unavoidable emissions and offering their passengers the option to compensate using high quality carbon removal. Together, we have made three different options, ranging from planting trees that absorb co2 from the air, to using technological solutions like Bio-oil and Blue Carbon that can permanently remove co2 from the atmosphere.
I have personally heard over and over that people have seen “super cheap” offsetting available when booking flights, and they simply don’t believe that it has an impact. To a large extent, they are right:
You get what you pay for, and if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Flying has substantial emissions, and paying a couple of euros for credits from a renewable energy project does not make a much difference on climate change.

High quality does not come cheap. Using only permanent removal, a flight from Copenhagen to Reykjavik would cost €34. This is at a price of €200 per ton, which is aligned with the recommendation of the Danish Climate Council.
It is, of course, not feasible for any airline to offset all emissions using these methods, but giving the passengers the option, and showing what it would cost to truly compensate emissions is a big first step, and an indication of where we all need to go.
PLAY is in a good position to be a leader here. They operate a fleet of newer airplanes, with relatively low emissions, which means that removing the emissions of a flight with PLAY would cost less than with other airlines. By getting this data out to consumers, we can influence behavior, and start reducing our emissions to align with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
