Now you can compensate for your flight by physically removing your CO₂ emissions from the atmosphere with high quality carbon removal projects

Carbon removal options

Option 1

Planting trees with certified projects

Plant trees and deliver benefits to people and animals in a cost-effective way! Remove CO₂ from the atmosphere using high-quality projects from all over the world through forestation and soil sequestration projects.

Forestation: 91.27% + Soil Sequestration: 8.73% *

20 € per ton of CO₂

Option 2

Go beyond planting trees

Use a mix of nature-based, engineered, and hybrid carbon removal methods to make an impact. This way, you can remove some of your emissions permanently while keeping the cost at a level that won't break your travel budget.

Bio-oil: 2.15% + Enhanced Weathering: 2% +
Biochar: 12.5% + Soil Sequestration: 4% +
Aquatic Biomass Sinking: 3.5% + Forestation: 75.85% *

50 € per ton of CO₂

Option 3

Make your removal permanent

Remove your emissions and keep them out of the atmosphere for hundreds of years through hybrid and engineered methods such as biochar, bio-oil, aquatic biomass sinking, and enhanced weathering.

Bio-oil: 5.04% + Enhanced Weathering: 23% +

Aquatic Biomass Sinking: 8.9% + Biochar: 63.06% *

200 € per ton of CO₂

Certified quality

Play has chosen Klimate as a partner to ensure project quality and transparency

In order to ensure that you are only supporting the best possible projects, Klimate undergoes a thorough analysis looking at the climate impactsocial and environmental impact, integrity and outlook

Climate impact

Klimate evaluates the permanence, rapidity and additionality of carbon removal projects to determine the impact they have on climate change.

Social and environmental impact

Beyond carbon removal, Klimate evaluates the social and environmental benefits that carbon removal projects generate.

Integrity

Klimate analyses the accounting, certification standards, and verification procedures of carbon removal projects to ensure sound and credible projects.

Outlook

Klimate analyses the potential benefits and risks of the carbon removal projects and technologies to future-proof your investments.

You might ask...

How do we calculate your emissions?

We only operate Airbus A320neo Family aircrafts that have the newest technology and 15-20% lower fuel consumption than older generation aircrafts. All A320neo family aircrafts have similar fuel consumption so you can always be sure, when flying with PLAY, that you are in a fuel-efficient aircraft. What may vary from one flight to another is load factor and weather conditions.

For the calculation of CO per flight, we use the following variables:

  • Our own history fuel data to find average fuel consumption for each destination.  To factor in uncertainty and variance we add 10% buffer
  • Average number of passengers, which is the load factor. Our load factor is adjusted frequently to ensure accuracy, but is typically above 80%
  • Average flight time for each destination
  • Emission factor, 3.15 according to EU/UK – Emissions Trading System (ETS)

CO per passenger for selected destination = Average fuel consumption x Flight time of selected destination x Emission factor (3.15) / Load factor

Where does my offset contribution go?

We partner with Klimate to remove your emissions with diverse suppliers listed in your removal selection.

When you choose one of these removal options, 20% of your cost will cover operational costs for Klimate and no other cost will be charged by PLAY.

We split your contribution in order to optimise your climate impact. Some remove CO₂ from the atmosphere for thousands of years, while others will only keep it out for a few decades. Some have great benefits for biodiversity and social impact while others only remove CO₂.

By increasing your budget, you augment your portion of permanent solution in your removal, and crucially send a market signal that there is demand for new solutions to the climate challenge.

We didn't make this up ourselves, if you want to dig into the science of why we need to combine methods, we strongly encourage you to read the Oxford Principles for future-aligned Offsetting.

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the total greenhouse gas emissions caused by an individual, event, organization, service, place or product, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent. In this instance, the carbon footprint of your flight with us.

What is carbon offsetting?

An offset or compensation is an action taken by entities or individuals to level their emissions by paying for carbon negative activities. In general, offsets aim to remove or avoid the same amount of emissions as have been caused.

What is additionality?

Additionality is a defining concept of carbon-offset projects. To qualify as a genuine carbon offset, the reductions achieved by a project need to be 'additional' to what would have happened if the project had not been carried out (e.g. continued as business-as-usual)
