Prolog Coffee & Klimate: finding a match for carbon mitigation and good coffee

Prolog Coffee, a specialty coffee roastery working to do what they can to create a better quality of life, partnered with Klimate to take action in addressing their carbon footprint. After first meeting at a B Corp dinner for CEO’s, Prolog and Klimate realised that the two objectives of carbon mitigation and good coffee find their intersection easily. Through this collaboration, Prolog integrates high-quality carbon removal solutions into their sustainability approach, setting a new benchmark for more climate-conscious coffee businesses.

Intro

Why carbon removal

Coffee production is inherently carbon-intensive, from cultivation and processing to transportation and roasting. While Prolog had already taken steps to reduce emissions, they acknowledged the need to go beyond reductions and engage in high-integrity carbon removal. The challenge was identifying a solution that aligned with their values: scientifically robust, transparent, and impactful.

Recognising the environmental impact of coffee production and transportation, Prolog sought a long-term strategy to not just reduce their emissions but also actively remove carbon from the atmosphere.

Introduction by the B Corp Network ensures a partnership with aligned company values, passion, and importantly, trust.

“We want to take ownership of our emissions, not just through reduction but by actively contributing to solutions like carbon removal. Working with Klimate has helped us make informed and impactful decisions.”

Carbon removal strategy

Klimate worked closely with Prolog to design a tailored carbon removal strategy, selecting projects that match Prolog’s commitment to sustainability. The approach included:

  • High-Quality Carbon Removal: Investing in durable solutions such as biochar and direct air capture to permanently store carbon.
  • Transparency & Credibility: Ensuring that the selected projects met stringent standards for verification and impact measurement.
  • Integration into Business Strategy: Aligning carbon removal with Prolog’s broader sustainability goals, enhancing their climate reporting and communication.

Finding value-alignment from the B Network

To understand the importance and nuances of carbon markets, Prolog invited Co-CEO Katja Grothe-Eberhardt to a coffee in their meatpacking coffee shop. Together, they covered how future climate action might look from carbon taxation, beyond value chain mitigation, and a world where sustainability is considered from the outset of starting a company.

The partnership started on common ground: caring for future quality of life, environment, and impact. Beyond just sharing insights and a like-minded approach, the necessary pieces for a strong collaboration include trustworthiness and integrity.

The Impact

Since partnering with Klimate, Prolog has taken a leadership role in sustainability within the coffee industry by committing to measurable and science-backed carbon removal.

Key results so far:

  • Prolog removed 55.5 tonnes of GHG in 2024, an amount equal to their travel emissions for the previous year.

A Shared Vision for Sustainability

This partnership is just the beginning. Prolog and Klimate continue to explore ways to enhance impact, expand carbon removal efforts, and inspire others in the coffee industry to take action. By embedding high-quality carbon removal into their business, Prolog is setting a powerful example of how small businesses can drive meaningful environmental change.
