Carbon Removal Project

Biosorra

Biosorra Project Hippo in Murang'a county, Kenya is producing certified biochar carbon removal and providing regenerative agriculture education programs. Using already available agricultural waste from the area, the project transforms it into biochar carbon removal that is used as fertiliser, leading to increased yield for farmers while simultaneously safely storing carbon.

Overview

Nested in front of a beautiful Hippo Lake, Biosorra’s project Hippo is working to transform crop waste into crop yield with their patented proprietary technology to scale this biochar solution and contribute to climate justice.

They are producing biochar alongside regenerative agricultural programs that work to demystify biochar and utilise carbon removal to restore soil fertility. This ultimately aims to increase farmers’ incomes. The project has thus far been able to provide affordable biochar, decreasing the need for subsistence farmers to purchase off-farm fertiliser and boost yields.

Highlight

With a patented technology leaning on science, research and development, Biosorra integrate end-to-end biochar learning with agronomic know-how all with the vision to restore carbon balance among farming families in Kenya.

Biosorra uses a model known as Participatory Informational Community Development (PICD), an approach aimed at empowering communities to discern the root causes of inequity and collaboratively devise solutions with agronomic know-how to boost local incomes. They hope to optimise natural waste resources to create a circular economy model that benefits local communities so farmers can restore soil fertility and fight climate change.

This project has been recognised by the following:

  • Winners of the XPRIZE Carbon Removal in 2022 and Top 29 Final Teams
  • Certified by EBC/WBC/Carbon Standards International
  • Winner of IBI Academy 2023 Sponsored Scholars

Team members demonstrate biochar application at Murang'a school as part of the team's education programming.

About

Co-founders Ines and Carla went to Kenya in 2022 and saw first-hand how climate change was affecting crops and farmlands. They also noticed how much available crop material was being burned. So, they were inspired to begin the first Biosorra pilot and later scaled to the largest industrial biochar removal facility in Kenya.

We are optimising existing natural waste resources and operations to create an EcoVillage Circular Economy model that overwhelmingly benefits traditional underserved communities and farmers to restore climate and soil fertility in the tropics.

Biosorra

Vision

Aiming to scale up to a future megatonne capacity, Biosorra has already created 15+ green jobs in the area and worked with more than 2,000 farmers. As a woman-led and operated company, Biosorra’s project aims to boost opportunity for women, farmers, and rural inhabitants in Kenya.
