Planboo - Sri Lanka Biocharge Elpitiya

This project has successfully been implemented in large Sri Lankan tea, cinnamon, and rubber plantations, aiming to educate local farmers on enhancing compost production through biochar development. The pilot project demonstrated scalability across the country and tropical regions, encompassing kiln design, fabrication, and the discovery of optimal organic liquid compost blends. In response to challenges posed by escalating fertiliser prices and government restrictions on chemical fertilisers, the initiative provides a sustainable and cost-effective alternative for agricultural practices. By integrating biochar into their farming methods, Sri Lankan farmers can reduce reliance on costly chemical fertilisers and promote soil health in an environmentally friendly manner. The project utilises waste biomass from cinnamon sticks and rubber wood as feedstock.

Partnering with Klimate was a natural step for Planboo. From early conversations, it was clear they understood the challenges and importance of developing carbon removal projects in the tropics. Their commitment to off-take carbon credits is pivotal for the growth projects in a nascent industry.

The pilot project with Elpitiya was the first project to ever generate a carbon removal credit in Sri Lanka. The country has faced challenges related to increasing fertiliser prices and governmental restrictions on chemical fertilisers.
